A satsang is a Hindu devotional gathering to hear a spiritual leader, or 'godman'. These events draw enormous, faithful crowds — often from rural communities and far beyond the expected numbers. At Hathras, devotees surged to touch the guru's path and gather sacred soil as he departed; that devotional act contributed to the fatal crush.
Why this incident matters to event managers today:The end of an event is often more dangerous than the start — everyone leaves at once. Permitted capacity must be enforced at the gate, not just written on paper, and departure must be planned and staged just as carefully as arrival. An exit surge from an oversized crowd is a predictable, preventable killer.
