How it works
We start from common steward-to-attendee ratios — often around 1:100 for lower-risk crowds, tightening as density, alcohol, standing audiences and late-night events raise the risk — then add suggested security and first-aid cover scaled to your numbers.
Why it matters
Too few trained staff is a recurring factor in crowd incidents: no one to spot a building crush, open a relief exit, or start first aid in the minutes that matter most. Right-sizing your team before the event is far cheaper than discovering the gap on the night.
Good practice
- Brief every steward on their position, the evacuation plan and how to escalate.
- Add cover for alcohol, standing crowds, headline acts and entry/exit surges.
- Keep first-aiders reachable and their locations known to all staff.
