How it works

We divide your usable area — not the total footprint — by a safe space-per-person figure for your crowd type (more room for standing or moving crowds, less for seated), then flag the density risk and your Martyn's Law tier.

Why it matters

Crushes are driven by density, not headcount. At around 5+ people per square metre, individuals can no longer control their own movement and pressure travels through the crowd in waves. Setting a safe capacity from area is the single most important number for a venue.

Good practice

Base it on usable space — after stages, bars, barriers and furniture.
Lower the limit for standing, moving or alcohol-fuelled crowds.
Density is dynamic — monitor hotspots during the event, don't just set a door count.
